Ask ASKOSAW BLADE WEARAll cutting tools wear in service and saw blades are no exception. In friction and hot sawing, the production of a "burr" or "moustache" is almost unavoidable, but is usually easy to remove. As saw teeth wear, their shape changes and they cease to perform as designed. This always produces undesirable side effects. At best, cutting forces increase and excessive heat is generated, resulting in higher power consumption, heavier burr and "splashout" of molten steel which is difficult to remove. Increased material removal off the diameter of the saw blade is required in re-grinding and fewer regrinds are possible before reaching discard size. As wear increases further, fatigue cracking may become a problem as the forces and stress cycles increase and drastic repairs to the blade or discard become necessary. Worn teeth increase the likelihood of clogging with consequent risk of catastrophic failure. ASKO recommends that blades be changed at regular scheduled intervals. In the case of hot saws, it is common for the blades to last more than one shift but there is little economic advantage in risking excessive wear and unscheduled downtime. Friction sawing is a more arduous operation and on heavier duty applications it is often necessary to change blades more frequently to avoid cracking and other problems. We encourage you to contact ASKO for assistance in your specific application. |
